Here’s a physics lesson that turns out to be a life lesson: an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion, unless something acts on it. Newton was talking about billiard balls. But a lot of autistic people read that and think — oh, that’s just Tuesday.
Autistic inertia is the difficulty transitioning between states of activity. It’s the reason you can’t get started on something even when you want to, and also the reason you can’t stop something even when you should. Same underlying thing, two directions. And it is one of the most misread parts of autistic experience, because from the outside it looks like laziness at one end and stubbornness at the other, when from the inside it’s neither.
Two problems, one cause
The rest-to-motion version is the one people recognize as “executive function” trouble. You’re sitting down, there’s a task, and the sheer act of beginning it feels like trying to push a stalled car. You’re not unwilling. You’re up against genuine startup resistance, and “just start” is about as useful as telling the car to just drive.
The motion-to-rest version gets talked about less, and it’s just as real. Once you’re in an activity, stopping it can be genuinely painful — a deep, physical resistance to breaking off. You keep reading, keep working, keep scrolling, keep doing the thing well past the point you meant to, not because you lack discipline but because the disengaging itself is the hard part. Being interrupted mid-flow can feel disproportionately awful for exactly this reason.
Put them together and you get a nervous system that finds change of state expensive, in either direction. The middle of an activity is comfortable. The edges — getting in, getting out — are where the cost lives.
Why the usual advice misses
Most productivity advice assumes the enemy is motivation, so it prescribes willpower: push harder, want it more, discipline yourself. But inertia isn’t a motivation problem, it’s a transition problem, and shame does nothing to a transition except make the next one heavier. Worse, being forced or startled out of an activity — or pressured to start one on someone else’s schedule — can tip inertia into genuine distress or shutdown.
It also stacks with other things. When you’re already tired, overstimulated, or low on capacity, inertia gets stickier in both directions. The days you “can’t get off the couch” and the days you “can’t put the project down” are often the same underlying system, just louder.
Working with the physics
You can’t will inertia away, but you can stop treating your body like it should behave like someone else’s, and start engineering gentler transitions.
Getting in tends to go better when you shrink the first step to something almost insultingly small — not “write the report,” just “open the document” — because inertia is heaviest right at the edge and often gives way the moment you’re actually moving. External starts help too: a body double, a timer, a routine that hands you the first action so you don’t have to generate it from scratch.
Getting out tends to go better with warning. A countdown, a buzz, a “five more minutes” you actually set — anything that lets your system see the stop coming instead of hitting it as an ambush. Building transitions into predictable routines means fewer of them have to be negotiated from zero. And crucially, wherever you can, give yourself permission to finish at a natural seam rather than being wrenched off mid-thought.
The reframe worth keeping: you are not a lazy person on the couch and a stubborn one at the desk. You’re one person with a nervous system that finds changing gears costly, and once you can see the gear-change as the actual task, you can start giving yourself the runway — in and out — that the wiring genuinely needs.
